It flows nice, but it could use a bit more zazz.

(First off... couldn't resist the use of the word zazz after watching as much Metalocalypse as I have)

Lots of good stuff here. It does flow really well. I don't feel the battle though. It's too chill for that. If you are looking for that battle feel.. it would help to break off the 4/4 steady beat you have going there and go for something with a bit more energy like a Dnb beat or something with a bit of glitch.

On that note, I do love the break and build that starts at 1:18. Now, if other parts were more aggressive, that would work really well.

As a song, I like this. It would work really well for level background music or something along the lines of that. It doesn't have that boss-battle type epic feel though that you seem to be going for though. Really though, there isn't too much I can complain about in this piece other than that.

Good work. 5/5, 9/10

PS. The answer to your question is simple. You can't rick roll a god. (I still have yet to be struck by lightning incredibly... although I have had a few close calls)

Syntrus responds:

Yep. But I can rick roll an aurora!? wtf?!

You aren't dead!!

Where ya been man?.. it's like ya fell off the face of the Earth.

Really like the lil break with the percussion at 1:30 as I'm sitting here listening and typing. Lots of melodic material going on, pretty crazy.

I do like the build you have going. It's chill and complex at the same time.

5'd and whatnot, good to see ya back again.

Awesomness indeed.

I'm almost tempted to attempt a low choral vocal over this, but sadly.. I haven't the slightest idea where my mic is. =[

Regardless though, excellent piece you have here. It has a nice build, with a touch of sadness. Maybe the aftermath of an epic battle or something.

The samples you use sound pretty good. The tuba gets iffy in the more extreme lows.. but for the most part sounds alright. I have trouble picking out problems with the other samples.
The percussion is very well layered. It really captures the mood of the piece well.

Anywho, beautiful piece here.

THEN FIND YOUR MIC >:(

Will check tuba. Thanks for pointing it out. :D

The combination of that Dnbish bass with the breakbeat and piano and whatnot is really cool. The song kinda reminds me of the music in the movie "Halloween".

Definitely would be really badass as a theme for a horror movie.

I would have liked a little more with the ending though. Just ending with the reverse cymbal didn't seem like enough to justify the piece.

Overall though, excellent work here. I love experimenting with stuff like this, and it is really interesting what all you have going on in here.

I can't wait to hear more of these "Colour of Music" tracks you are working on, from the sound of this song, I expect them to be great.

WritersBlock responds:

Cheers, man. Thanks for the review. I'm thinking that once I've got the series up on newgrounds (may take ages...) I might touch up on them a bit. I think a bit more tension at the end here would be cool. The other tracks probably won't be as radical as this one, but they'll all have a decent amount of effort in them and so the variety of styles should all be good to listen to. I've got another song done, but I'm going to polish that one up and post it at the end of the month. It's amusing, because that one is an upbeat, happy, soft techno tune.

Holy shizz man!!!

You did this with free VSTs!?!?

Wow, you need to point me in the direction of these.

I really like the melodic material here. Damn... it's been looping... and I didn't even notice. Well, anyway.. the string part you have here is great.

As for other instrumentation.. I know there are some great free french horn soundfonts that would sound nice here, as for woodwinds.. flute... hell maybe even a shakuhachi.. actually, if you could find a good sounding soundfont of a shakuhachi, that would sound great here.

Anyway, 5/5 10/10 and such.

WritersBlock responds:

Cheers, man.
The strings I used here were all in a VST called DSK strings, which you can find at KVR audio. The brass one I've got is by the same company, DSK Brass, and I've started putting the brass into the song as well now. As for the woodwinds, I've got a flute, but I'll probably sample the rest off my keyboard. And I should wiki "shakuhachi", I have no idea what that is.

My main worry is that with all the instruments going, it's going to be difficult to mix it all together at the end. Just with the brass and strings, I've got major issues...

Thanks for the review.

Minus the crash...

I'd say this song would sound great at 145mph!

I just don't feel like dying yet. =P

Probably not gonna listen to it in my car, but maybe playing Burnout or something, lol.

Great stuff here!

This would sound great at 140mph.

I'll agree with the guy below.. this would rock on a highway at night.. goin really fast.

But yes, nice build, lil slow in the intro, but the effect is nice.. the main arp that you use down low sounds awesome.. and I love that lead you use.

Beat is simple, but it works well here, that and the strings add a nice touch to the melody you have going.

The piano and FX are also a real nice touch.

Keep up the good work! I'll have to remember to keep an eye out for your stuff. (I'm sitting here listening.. and the slowdown at the end sounds damn nice.. I like what you do with the beat there)

NemesisTheory responds:

Just as long as we'd not get fined for speeding, right? Haha. :p

I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it mate. If you're really interested in my stuff, check back in early feb when my next project is due for the clubs, I'll upload it as well. :D

Also, thanks for the scores!
You'd think with all the people giving 5's the score would be rising instead of dropping this fast, lol. :p

We are our own greatest critics.

This song turned out really well, it's nothing at all to worry about. It's just a common thing that happens to any artist. As we get better at what we do, we become more and more critical of our own work.. eventually to the point where we may even think that we have gotten worse.

Look through your old songs, and compare them to the newer ones. There is progress. You just have to keep trying, even if it seems sub-par.. more likely than not, it is probably good stuff if good stuff is what you make. (If you are like me and make mediocre crap.. you just get mediocre crap.. but hey, I'll keep trying)

So, I guess my point is.. don't be afraid to submit things that don't seem that great at the time. Chances are, your fans will think otherwise.

Anyway, great stuff here. It has an aggressive start, and the melody folds in well.. I think one of my favorite parts is the break at 2:30, that sounded amazing. The only thing I could see to rework now is to fade the ending chord a hair faster, because the lead resolves really well there and that chord takes away from it a bit.

5/5 10/10 -Echoz
Keep crankin dem tunes man!

I might wanna play with... =P

Well, first off.. I am in the middle of an upgrade, so I won't have my new setup ready for at least a couple weeks... but as soon as I do.. I'd love to work with a few of your songs.

I'm about to start another band with an electric guitarist buddy of mine.. I dunno about this song.. but definitely some of your songs might go great with that..

I've played with just about every type of electronic music.. although until now, have been handicapped by lack of equipment.. but I would definitely like to collab sometime if you are interested. =]

And the song is beautiful, of course. Your voice has that sort of ethereal feel, and it just makes my ears happy I guess, lol.

But yes.. 5/5 10/10 -Echoz.

You...

are a great singer!
I don't know of many that are that good at self-harmonizing... but you excel at it!

As for record deals.. ya know, you could always produce your albums on your own and just get a distribution deal, a lot of artists are starting to go that way because it tends to be more profitable in the end.

Anyway, I'd love to remix one of your tracks sometime, you have an excellent voice.. bet it would sound nice with trance or something =]

5/5 10/10 -Echoz

I live for the lulz. =D
